Epic Fantasy

Epic fantasy features vast, sprawling worlds with rich histories, complex mythologies, and high-stakes conflicts. Stories often follow multiple characters across kingdoms or continents, with quests, wars, and political intrigue forming the backbone. Magic systems are integral, as are legendary creatures and ancient prophecies. Tone is serious, often blending moral struggles with battles between light and dark forces.

Urban fantasy takes magical or supernatural elements and places them in modern, real-world, or urban settings. The genre blends the everyday with the extraordinary—detectives who track vampires, secret magical societies hidden in cities, or modern characters discovering latent powers. The tone can range from gritty noir to humorous or romantic, but the clash between the mundane and the magical drives the narrative.

Romantasy merges fantasy worldbuilding with a central romantic plotline. While the setting may include kingdoms, magic, or supernatural beings, the core of the story revolves around the characters’ emotional and romantic journeys. Romantic tension, slow burns, and forbidden love are common, often layered with quests, court intrigue, or magical stakes. The romance is not secondary. It is interwoven with the fantasy elements, making both essential to the story.

These are the types of fantasy I am most apt to write. Epic fantasy for the foreseeable future will focus on over 30 years of world-building, focused on the World of the Lianshi stories. These are stories that center on Francesca, who is featured in the bestselling fantasy short story Curse of the Lianshi

The Bard of Masaghdiva by Ben Wolfe

In the aftermath of the concubines’ audacious escape, the western kingdoms are reeling. Heads of Wraith Riders now adorn enemy gates, and in the citadel of Arkenheim, Lord‑Warren and his wife Pria are forced to confront a terrible truth: the mysterious Wraith Riders are their own daughters. With proof that these young women aided the concubines’ flight and even attempted to kill the Konigar, war against Vordosha is inevitable.

Far to the east, the immortal Lianshi Empress wages a different battle. Cursed to remain ageless until her blood ties are severed, she seeks to forge a dangerous “blood‑bond” with the Dravin’s changeling ward—an alliance that will grant her draconic power but could doom her successor to bear Allia’s curse. As a reminder of their bargain, the Dravin presents Allia with “Claw,” a blade carved from the dragon‑goddess Tiamat’s own talon. a weapon hungry for vengeance against the god‑killer Baphomet.

Meanwhile, on the sacred island of Altishan, a naked stranger is pulled from a forbidden pool by two aelfen guardians. She is Esther, a Wraith Rider on a desperate quest to find her brother and the legendary Bard of Masaghdiva, and she is prepared to pay with ancient coin. Her search will draw her back into the tangled schemes of gods and mortals, forcing alliances with reluctant elves like La’renz and daring traders such as Onna, even as Allia’s empire consumes refugees and former concubines alike.

The Bard of Masaghdiva is a sweeping second installment of the Wraith Riders Trilogy, weaving together a cursed empress’s bid for freedom, a sister’s uncompromising quest, and the revelation of a secret order of warrior‑women that threatens to shatter empires. Betrayal, blood‑magic, and the looming specter of war propel Esther and her sisters toward a confrontation that will decide the fate of both the old world and the new.
